Oskar Nedbal was born into a Czech-speaking family in Tábor in southern Bohemia (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire). After studying at the Prague Conservatory under Antonín Dvořák, he was a violist and organizer of the Bohemian String Quartet from 1892 to 1906, contributing significantly to its worldwide fame. Nedbal was a co-founder and conductor of the Bohemian Philharmonic and, from 1906 to 1919, chief conductor of the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra, which he founded himself, where he was celebrated as an operetta composer. The slow waltz "The Nightingale" depicts an idyll with beautiful birdsong, embodied by a solo flute, and is taken from the music for the 1914 fairytale play "Andersen." The arrangement is kept in the original key for symphony orchestra and was first time performed by the Municipal Band of Zirl, Tyrol, Austria conducted by Albert Schwarzmann in November 2018.
