Flight of the Bumblebee by N.Rimsky-Korsakov for B♭Clarinet and piano. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844–1908) was a Russian composer, conductor, and music educator, and one of the leading exponents of Russian national music. He belonged to the group of composers known as “The Five,” and played a key role in developing a distinctly Russian musical tradition. Originally trained as a naval officer, he later devoted himself fully to music, teaching at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and mentoring eminent composers such as Stravinsky and Prokofiev.
Rimsky-Korsakov is especially renowned for his exceptional orchestration skills, evident in works such as Scheherazade, Christmas Eve, and the opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan. “The Flight of the Bumblebee” (1899–1900) was composed as an orchestral interlude within that opera.
“The Flight of the Bumblebee” is a piece demanding extremely fast tempo and virtuosic technique; it musically depicts the motion of a bumblebee in flight. Originally part of an opera, it has since been transcribed for many instruments and become a celebrated solo showpiece.
This clarinet arrangement is devised to highlight the instrument’s agility and brilliance, tailoring the technically demanding passages so that they can be played with elegance and clarity. It offers a dazzling performance experience—as if a bumblebee indeed were darting through the air.
