"My Funny Valentine" is a show tune from the 1937 Rodgers and Hart musical Babes in Arms, Babes in Arms opened at the Shubert Theatre on Broadway, in New York City on April 14, 1937 and ran for 289 performances. “My Funny Valentine” became a very popular jazz standard and has appeared on over 1300 albums and performed by over 600 artists.
In the original Broadway musical, Babes in Arms, this song was performed by a woman addressing a man actually called Valentine.
She is teasing him, pointing out his flawed physique and intelligence. Nevertheless she doesn’t want him to change as he makes her happy.
