Serenade of the Doll

Serenade of the Doll is a movement taken from the suite Children's Corner, but it is strongly related in character to the two other pieces in this volume. All three are Spanish in style and influence, and are excellent examples of the many different moods to be found in such music. The Serenade imitates the simple strumming of a guitar in its accompaniment to a gently flowing triple rhythm and this gives the piece the softness which is so suitable for the doll (belonging to Debussy's daughter) who is being serenaded.

La Puerta Del Vino

The bright sound of the guitar dominates this piece, playing in the style and mood of teh Spanish Habanera, a lively and usually very passionate dance. The piece is named after a palace gateway in Alhambra, but the mood of the music seems to represent the strength and warmth of the Spanish sun and the movement of people working in the sun. It is taken from the second book of Preludes, published in 1913.

Sarabande

The suite 'Pour le Piano' was written in 1901 and amongst Debussy's piano works provides and interesting start to the 20th Century. The Sarabande from the work is richly coloured in a rather romantic style and owes a good deal to the influences of Erik Satie and Maurice Ravel. The richness of the chords requires a full tone and careful balancing of the hands to obtain the maximum warmth of sound.
