Very much written in the English tradition, this piece is redolent of Britten and the more approachable works of Tippett. This is hardly surprising, given the English upbringing and training of the composer. This substantial piece of a cappella writing was commissioned for the 40th anniversary of the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus, a choir that Arnatt himself founded shortly after emigrating to the US. It is very clearly printed, and the writing itself is clear, combining homophonic passages with fragments of polyphony. The words, by Edith Sitwell, are very arresting; this is sure to be an audience-pleaser where your audience is educated and curious.
