What if a pokémon was incapable of being revived? What if all items and abilities of escape were rendered hopeless? How can a trainer return back if no one is there to hear your screams before the blackout?
A trainer and his companion enter into an eerie, mysterious cave. However, the cave becomes more difficault to traverse as they explore further. They discover a piles of bones and supernatural presences, which activates their fight or flight to escape. Heartbeats begin to escalate when they struggle to locate an exit through the pitch black cave.
Mt. Flatline was inspired by Junichi Masuda's "Lavender Town" theme and the early twentieth-century twelve tone row techniques of Arnold Schoenberg, Burl Ives, and Igor Stravisnsky. Both the melody and bass line were kept minimalistic to preserve the chiptune, technical limitations of Nintendo's Game Boy handheld.
Using a pitch class wheel, I wanted to create a twelve tone shape akin to an electrocardiogram (EKG) machine. The pulsing throughout the piece is notated on a B natural, which is typically the most prominent pitch to sound on a flatline (or at least popularized from film productions).
