Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Arranged by George Willson. This edition: pdf, streaming. Christmas, Classical. Score and parts. 44 pages. George Willson #4592559. Published by George Willson (A0.927172).
Before Leroy Anderson's iconic Sleigh Ride, there was Mozart's. The last of his Three German Dances was most likely composed for a ball in Vienna's Imperial Court, and like many artists today, Mozart took a "just add sleigh bells" approach to creating a wintry atmosphere. Sleigh rides were a popular winter pastime in Vienna during Mozart's time, and it is said that the composer wrote this piece to mimic the sensation of going up and down the snow-covered hills on an 18th century sleigh.
Updating the arrangement from a small Viennese orchestra to a modern band, this arrangement takes some limited liberties with Mozart's original composition while retaining it in its entirety. Additional countermelodies and tonal alterations in the opening repeated strains add interest while additional common percussion eschews the historical need for pitched sleigh bells during the "sleigh ride" portion. Trombone and piccolo get a little exposure while the original posthorn parts are shared between trumpets and french horns. The goal in all was maximum accessibility for the average band while bringing a little piece of Mozart to the modern stage. Merry Christmas.
George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.
Mp3 provided is a midi extracted from the composition program.
