An evocative, nature-inspired electroacoustic work for soloist and fixed media, this work is inspired by Sophora secundiflora (Texas mountain laurel), an evergreen native to the limestone regions of the American Southwest. Known for its glossy foliage, lavender blooms, and distinctive grape-like fragrance, the plant presents a striking contrast between beauty and toxicity—its vivid red seeds contain a powerful alkaloid once used in ceremonial contexts. Part documentary, part techno house, this work blends virtuosic performance with synthwave grooves.
Sophora secundiflora, also known as Texas Mountain Laurel, is a nativeevergreen ornamental tree, valued for its handsome, dark green foliage andlush lavender blooms. It is drought-tolerant, prefers rocky limestone soil, and is native to the southwest region of North America, spanning fromcentral Texas to New Mexico, and reaching as far south as San Luis Potosi,Mexico. The fragrance of Texas mountain laurel flowers is reminiscent ofartificial grape products, such as Grape Kool-Aid. The lacquer red seedswere valued by indigenous people for ceremonial use; they contain thehighly poisonous alkaloid cytisine (or sophorine), a substance related tonicotine and widely cited as a narcotic and hallucinogen.
