As an adult learner, this book is pure joy! The intermediate level is perfectly achievable with some practice, and it's so satisfying to finally play those legendary Motown bass lines from 'Various' artists. The 'exact transcriptions' really help me sound like the record. It's a fun and relaxing way to connect with classic soul, and a great motivator to keep practicing!

While this is a bass tablature book, the inclusion of vocal melody, lyrics, and chord names makes it surprisingly useful for vocal coaches and collaborative musicians. The bass lines themselves are foundational for these Motown classics, providing a strong rhythmic and harmonic anchor for singers. It offers excellent insight into how the bass supports the vocal, even if you're not playing bass yourself.

This collection of Motown bass classics is fantastic for my intermediate students. The inclusion of both standard notation and tablature is invaluable for developing reading skills and understanding these iconic bass lines. The engraving is clear, making it easy to follow. It's an encouraging challenge for students to dive into classic soul grooves, enhancing their rhythm and technique with authentic transcriptions.

Why isn’t James Jamerson given any credit for these transcriptions? Is it a copyright thing? Could have been entitled: “James Jamerson’s Greatest Hits”.

I have had this book a while but have only just got around to using it.Audibly I am sure that the transcriptions are accurate, but I find it hard to believe that songs were played on bass in keys such as B Major, Eb Major and Db Major, it would seem more likely that the Bass was detuned a 1/2 tone i.e. Eb instead of E and that the songs was played in C, E, and D.The transcriptions would have been better in these keys with a detune notification ... all IMHO !!!

A great collection of notated and tabbed classic soul bass playing, the blue print for great bass lines. Also includes accurate lyrics, melody, vocal harmonies and chord notation...so an excellent 'fake book' for the whole band, not just the bass foundation.Great for analysing why these lines worked so well and help you create better bass lines
