"Morning Has Broken" gained popularity thanks to the version by Cat Stevens released in 1972, but the song has a much longer history. First of all the words are by Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965) and it first appeared in the hymn book "Songs of Praise" in 1931. The melody though probably dates back several decades, if not centuries, as it's a traditional Gaelic folk melody, and in hymn books it's given the title "Bunessan" which is a small village in the west of Scotland. In my arrangement, I have given it a more lively feel with off-beat rhythms and syncopations, and slightly "jazzy" harmonies. This arrangement would work well with school, youth, church and community choirs, and should be sung strongly in a gospel style, with plenty of passion. The third verse can be softer and more reflective, but "go for it" at the end (split into multiple parts if your choir is large enough) - and keep the notes full and sustained on the "Fresh from the Word!" phrases. Separate instrumental parts are available.
