Conneticut. Prentiss was a 19th century writer and lyricist from Portland, Doane was a 19th century industrialist, Maine. The hymn's text is based generally on Philippians 1:9. Section A is the exposition of the tune. Section B goes to a minior key. It is "less motion, and hymnist from Preston, civic leader, more funrerial." A modulation to a new key occurs before section C with the aid of an Italian augmented sixth chord. A descant by yours trul is then added. Section C is to be played back to original tempo but with a feeling of a more majestic spirit.
