By Shirley Bassey. By Hal David and John Barry. Arranged by John Langley for Studio Orchestrations. This edition: pdf, streaming. 20th Century, Broadway, Film/TV, Musical/Show, Standards, Thriller. Full Orchestra. 83 pages. Www.studio-orchestrations.com #1305619. Published by www.studio-orchestrations.com (A0.1744888).
This arrangement is in the original film soundtrack/Shirley Bassey key
Moonraker was the 11th James Bond outing and the 4th for Roger Moore as the title character. Live and let die and The Man with the Golden Gun by Bond metrics were quite modest in terms of sets and storylines, where The Spy who loved me returned to the huge conceptual huge sets (submarine swallowing supertankers, a Lotus Esprit that doubled as a submarine and the massive submersible Atlantis HQ lair for our villain) with cataclysmic world changing consequences.
Moonraker continued with that trend of larger than life storylines and seized the entirely new - yet to be fully operational - true to life concept of the Space Shuttle, except the villain Drac has a large fleet of them and they are not only armed with lasers but the vast space station-ark they connect to has a regiment of space troopers too. It is all very fanciful and arguably overblown but like so many Bond films very entertaining. For your eyes only which followed pared everything back to being less about gimmicks andmuch more about characters and action.
The title song is the 3rd and last title song that Shirley Bassey recorded for the James Bond series and was much more mellow and relaxed than the previous torch anthems Goldfinger or Diamonds are forever. John Barry who had composed most of the Bond soundtracks was clearly captivated by Bassey's amazing vocal quality, as was the watching and listening audience. This song is not as dramatic nor intense as Bassey’s previous two outings but has an undeniable charm, wistfulness and personality all of its own.
This song and arrangement is suitable for an orchestra of good standard and would program well into an evening of film music, Bond music, or a concert of easy listening vocal standards.
