The Moonlight Waltz was designed to be short and accessible to smaller, more intermediate ensemble. Somewhat melodramatic and tongue-in-cheek, the music is essentially a humoresque, and allows the ensemble to explore a variety of techniques and articulations. The soloists are encouraged to be expressive in their interpretations, particularly the clarinet and oboe (whose melodies and counter melodies weave in and out of each other, as dance partners might.) Plucked pizzicato sections give way to sweeping “schmalzy” lines before closing with a wink. An enjoyable piece for younger ensembles!
