I was inspired to write missa brevis pro mortuis, or "a brief mass for the dead" after attending multiple performances of famous Requiems and thinking that writing a short Requiem would be a good idea for my choir's annual Remembrance Day concert. I selected the following six movements:
I. Intriot
II. Kyrie eleison
III. Offertory
IV. Agnus Dei
V. Lux Aeterna
VI. In Paradisum
This six-movement requiem explores the emotional and spiritual journey from grief to peace. Where other requiems are typically more of a literal interpretation of the text suggesting that the souls of the dearly departed are in purgatory and we are begging for them to be granted a peaceful rest vs. everlasting damnation, I interpreted this as more as the irrational fears of a grief-addled mind taking a person through some very dark thoughts. The Introit opens the work weighed down with the crushing weight of grief and loss, transitioning into the simple plea for mercy of the Kyrie eleison where the search for mercy rises briefly in urgency before returning to a more subdued energy. The Offertory then evokes a chant-like mourning that gives way to a gentle hope, with the Agnus Dei offering a tender serenity. In the Lux Aeterna there is a feeling of tranquility and stasis with the upper voices creating the sparkling shimmering effect of the eternal light over a timeless grounding foundation in the lower voices. The concluding In paradisum is a light and delicate farewell, with all the weight of grief and sorrow of the opening having been replaced with a calmness and hope for the future.
