The title of the edition relates to the singing and dancing of the prophetess Miriam at the sea mentioned in the Torah. Significantly, the Berlin painter Wilhelm Hensel portrayed his wife, the composer Fanny Hensel nee Mendelssohn, as Miriam in the 19th century.
