German-born composer George Frederick Handel (1685-1759) spent most of his adult life in London, where he produced many operas, the famous oratorio, “Messiah” and various works for orchestra. Among the latter are three suites called “Water Music” because they were composed to be played on King George’s barge floating down the Thames River in the summer.
The Harrisville (PA) Community Band was looking for a work to feature their French horn section. John Jay Hilfiger, a member of the horn section, discovered some interesting movements of the Water Music that gave prominent parts to the horns and so he decided to make a band arrangement with the horn section as featured soloists. The resulting work, from the first of three Water Music Suites, is about three minutes long and not extremely challenging. It is a crowd pleaser and should be a welcome addition to the programs of many school and community bands.
