Composed as an evocative solo flute piece, Milky Way feebly attempts to capture both the beauty and vastness of our galaxy. The multiphonics offer an other-worldly sound. The flutter tongue passages represent meteors. The lilting melody with a sprinkle of Phrygian flavor and dash of whole tone scale add to the outer space vibe. As we all view and live in the Milky Way, let us all be of one heart reaching for the sky.
Performance note — To play the multiphonic with the D6 fingering, use just enough air speed to play both the D6 and the C5 simultaneously. To play the multiphonic with th 123 G# 456 fingering (D#6 without the right pinky), again use just the right air speed to get both A5 and G#4 to speak together. For the multiphonic trill, finger D6 to get the C5 pitch and trill the C# and D trill keys. If you don’t have a C# trill key, you may trill the D and D# trill keys. It’s encouraged to let the pitch bend as you do the crescendo and decrescendo. I recommend framing the piece with silence for best effect.
