Requested by his cousin, Andrey Tchaikovsky, this march was written in the Spring of 1893 for the 98th Yurevsky Infantry Regiment, for which Andrey was the commander. Pyotr Tchaikovsky never actually orchestrated this arrangement because he did not know the instrumentation of the group that would be playing it, so instead it was written for solo piano and orchestrated later. This piece captures the spirit of an Imperial Russian March and you can sense the pride the soldiers must have felt when this regiment played their very own march.
