Migration is a solo piece for classical guitar written in an avant-garde idiom. It draws inspiration from senj and dammām performances—a form of sacred ritual music from southern Iran that combines cymbals (senj) and the traditional drum (dammām). This music is traditionally used to announce that something significant and ominous is about to occur; it carries a sense of collective tension, warning, and inevitability.
Migration, as experienced by the composer, reflects the act of migration and beginning again from zero. It is both a profound challenge and something deeply rooted in human DNA. There is an inner force that urges us to move, to leave, while at the same time another voice insists that we stay. The piece inhabits this psychological and emotional contradiction.
Musically, the work expresses a “zoomed-out” perspective on the past—an ongoing motive rendered through a minimalist language. A persistent bass movement functions almost mechanically, propelling the piece forward, while a constant tension remains between the bass and the main melodic line. This unresolved friction mirrors the inner conflict of migration itself.
The piece requires scordatura and deliberately avoids conventional classical guitar idioms. At first glance, it may appear extremely difficult; however, once the performer understands the form and conceptual framework, the technical challenges become more manageable. Still, Migration demands that the guitarist think beyond traditional approaches to the instrument and engage with it in a more experimental, out-of-the-box manner.
