The "Faust" legend, made so famous by Goethe, later gave rise to a poem by Lenau, and it is an episode from the latter version which inspired Liszt to occupy himself with the subject for some time, composing versions of this Mephisto Waltz No.1 for solo piano, piano duet and eventually a spectacularly imaginative orchestral version.
Here again, it was the rich textures of the orchestra that inspired Richard Simm to make this new two-piano transcription.
It is not always easier to play than the composer's famously difficult piano solo, but Liszt's style of orchestration lends itself well to pianistic figurations, and of course the combined forces of two pianos comes much closer to the powerful effect of a symphony orchestra.
This is an unusual and exciting challenge for two concert pianists!
