Drumline Medley
This arrangement was inspired by necessity. Many years ago, the middle school band I had just started directing was required to march in the town's Memorial Day Parade, but I was warned that the 8th graders never wanted to do it. So I asked them, "what song would you like to play"? And, back then the number one hit movie for them was “Drumline!". I remembered that the students particularly liked two fun crowd pleasing stand tunes played by the Robert Morris University Band before and after A&T band’s technically difficult, brilliantly executed and maximum audience BOREDOM “Flight of the BumbleBee”. I pulled up that clip from the movie and asked which songs they would want to play-the answer was unanimous and the excitement immediately followed when I told them they would be playing both songs today! I knew that I only had one shot at winning my 8th graders over, so it had to be an arrangement that was good, but simple enough to learn within one rehearsal. It was written with these characteristics in mind and eventually a huge success! I taught the repetitive percussion and bass line of “The 900 Number” first, then added the intentionally easy 16th note licks to each of those sections individually. Finally, everyone learned the “Apache” section together. They took to the arrangement so quickly, that I added the optional step pattern-(Left Stop Right Left Right Stop Left Right Left Right…). Risky, but this ended up being their favorite part of the arrangement and the band really stood out during parades because of the simple interruptions in footwork. If proper rehearsal momentum is maintained, this should be a fun piece to learn, perform and march to. The audience will like it too!
