Matsushima is a an archipelago of some 800 islands in an area 12 miles wide, densely forested with pine trees whose branches, blown by sea winds, are twisted into millions of different shapes. Matsushima was commissioned by Andrew Melvin and first performed by him in Steyning, Sussex on 20 November 2005.
