Solo soprano voice, solo alto voice, solo tenor voice, solo bass voice, Mixed choir-SATB, organ (Soprano solo, Alto solo, Tenor solo, Bass solo, Mixed choir (SATB), Organ) - Level 3
SKU: BA.BA05421
Kyrie - Credo - Agnus Dei. Composed by Leos Janacek. Edited by Vilem Petrzelka. Arranged by Vilém Petrželka. Stapled. Musica sacra nova. Choral score, Performance score. Composed 1908. 34 pages. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA05421. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA05421).
ISBN 9790006470990. 10.63 x 7.48 inches. Key: E-flat major.
By reason of its conciseness of style, Janacek's Latin Mass from around 1907-1908 gives the impression of being an inspired sketch, rather than a finished work. In particular, the brevitv of the Agnus Dei is surprising in effect. The work has a number of striking features: its totally individual melodic and rhythmic style, resulting from Janacek's well-known approach to word-setting; the use of rests for expressive purposes; the original use of heterophony, which here replaces traditional polyphony; and the expressively written instrumental part.
A truly worthwhile piece offering reasonably proficient amateur choirs a good introduction to modern choral repertoire.
