If you read Roy Howat's commentary on this and other books of the Debussy series, you'll discover that this piece was in fact intended as the first number of a series to be called Suite Bergamasque. Editorial and other problems meant that the piece we now know by that name is in fact a previous composition dating from 1890 (this one is from 1905). The remaining numbers are D'un cahier d'esquisses and L'Isle Joyeuse both available also from Durand. So now I have a very exciting plan to study all three and reveal the true Suite Bergamasque! As usual with these editions, the quality is superb and makes for many enjoyable hours of study.
