Mary, Did You Know? is a modern Christmas classic. Mark Lowry’s lyrics include a series of unanswered questions to Mary, the mother of Jesus, regarding the birth and life of Christ. The music was composed by Buddy Greene in 1991. The song was recently made famous by the a cappella group Pentatonix, who released an album containing their vocal arrangement along with a music video in 2014.
The intent of this arrangement for clarinet quartet was to stay as close to the Pentatonix version as possible. However, the key has been raised half a step to suit the clarinet. It is important for all players to listen for the melody line as it passes between all parts. The accompaniment parts from rehearsal 11 to 35 feature interspersed "bell tones." These notes should have articulated beginnings, then fade away to allow room for the melody line. Subdividing is key for all parts to fit together.
