Looking for something out of the ordinary for Advent/Christmas? Imagine Mary, the mother of Jesus, as a young Kentucky woman singing her praise song to God (Magnificat) in an Appalachian setting. Then picture Simeon as an elderly West Virginia coal miner/preacher voicing his grateful joy (Nunc Dimittis) at viewing the baby boy Jesus in the temple -- an event that he has waited for his whole life. Translate the traditional Latin of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis into present-day language. Both these events combine to form the refreshingly different extended anthem "Mary & Simeon." Written in a natural, unpretentious style for violin (fiddle), cello, and bluegrass instruments, this one-of-a-kind setting of time-honored words promises to bring unexpected joy to worship during this holy season. It includes the congregation in a "Gloria" that ends both pieces. Extensive performance notes are included in the anthem. Use the anthems together in one service, as part of an Appalachian-themed Advent service, or use them separately on their individual liturgical special days.
