Marine Blue is a jazzy bass quartet that was commissioned for the intermediate ensemble and used during the summer 2025 Basstravaganza hosted in Fairfax, Virginia. Bass 1 shines on a melody that does not go above the halfway harmonic. Bass 2 & 3 harmonize in second and third position and switch between arco and pizzicato. Bass 4 is written primarily in half position, can be either bowed or plucked and has its own moments to shine with Bass 1. This piece is in A-B-A format with an intro and codetta and uses fun techniques such as glissando and easy harmonics. It also reinforces the fundamental mechanics of ensemble playing as players must navigate several tempo changes and a molto ritardando. Helpful bowings and phrasings have been included throughout.
The PDF download contains both a full score and a set of individual parts - Bass 1, Bass 2, Bass 3, and Bass 4. All individual parts are formatted on a single page to avoid page turns.
