Mari immaginari (Imaginary Seas) op. 4 is a suite for violin, viola, cello and piano composed by Caterina Barontini during the first lockdown in 2020. Her musical language is a kind of fusion between the research of 20th-century French authors like Debussy and Ravel and today's cinematic composers.
This work develops around sailing, seen as a symbol of life, a love story or a spiritual journey. The first movement aims to express the state of wonder, contemplation and desire that can pervade you when you stare at the seascape, and prepares you towards the courage to take off into an imaginary sea. The second movement depicts the dynamism of feelings and thoughts that characterize a departure: fear, will, uncertainty, hope, and finally, courage. The third movement (in 7/4 time signature) is about the moment in which the main character experiences anguish since they start to be afraid that the wind could stop blowing. The fourth movement starts as a thanksgiving for a new wind that has begun to blow. Then, the music's texture and its way to develop itself suggest to the listener that the wind is increasing more and more, gradually leading to a storm in the open sea. At the most dramatic point of the shipwreck, though, the theme of wonder linked to the first movement reappears.
The Author aims to point out that, as Chesterton wrote in Manalive, "When you're really shipwrecked, you do really find what you want. When you're really on a desert island, you never find it a desert"... And you start to re-wonder.
