Having just completed a six-movement work for violin and piano, I wanted to do a song cycle next. I had originally wanted to set excerpts from the infamous "À la recherche du temps perdu" by Marcel Proust. But when I started looking for texts in volume 1, "Swann's Way," it was so overwhelming that I gave it up!!
Then recalling a work I did of a poem by Pier Paolo Pasolini called "La Passione," I decided to look back into the bi-lingual book I have called "The Selected Poetry of Pier Paolo Pasolini" and there I found an early work called "La domènia uliva." It is a dialogue between a mother and her son (Christ). Fascinating, I thought. But the only problem is that the poem by Pasolini is in the obscure Friulian dialect. It looks and probably sounds nothing like contemporary Italian.
But, thanks to my Roman friend Matteo Cerami, who told me that he has a modern Italian version of the poem that Pasolini had made himself. Yay!!!
