Written for the Band and Bugles of The Rifles Composition Competition 2021, "Step Forward" is a march for concert or military band with optional bugles. The title comes from the Army website: "To protect the nation, we step forward and meet every challenge". The piece was awarded 2nd place.
The Director of Music, Major Jason Griffiths, said that "all members of the judging panel were highly impressed with [the] composition", with its "well thought out" melodies and counter-melodies and "harmonic-packed accompaniment" adding to the "overall effectiveness of the music".
The piece comes with parts for trombones and euphonium in treble clef.
