Dit werk, gebaseerd op volksliedjes van het eiland Man, heeft 4 van deze liedjes als grondslag. De eerste, The Good Old Way, is een oude en typische air, voor het grootste gedeelte in de Dorische toonsoort. Het grootste gedeelte van het liedje is waarschijnlijk toegevoegd omstreeks 1882, na de introduktie van het primitieve Methodisme op het eiland.Het tweede lied, waarmee het vluggere gedeelte van het werk is opgebouwd, is een echt volkslied: The Manx Fiddler. Chaloner, een schrijver in het midden van de zeventiende eeuw, bemerkte dat de bevolking van Man zich zeer tot de viool aangetrokken voelde zodat er in iedere familie wel enkele leden waren die het instrument bespeelden, maar omdat dezen slechte komponisten waren, was de kwaliteit van hun spel niet beter.Het derde lied, Sweet Water in the Common heeft als aanknopingspunt een jury van 24 man, samengesteld uit de parochies van het district (van iedere parochie drie personen), die als taak had de grenzen en de afwatering te regelen (Waterschap).Het laatste deel is een mooie oude hymne, The Harvest of the Sea, gezongen door de vissers als danklied na hun behouden thuiskomst.
