Excellent Collection for Intermediate Students
This Malay Folk Songs Collection is a gem for my early to mid-intermediate students. The arrangements by Charmaine Siagian are engaging, offering a wonderful introduction to diverse rhythms and musical styles. The clear notation and logical progression of difficulty make it ideal for teaching sight-reading and cultural appreciation. A fantastic addition to any piano teacher's repertoire library!

Effective Accompaniment for Folk Repertoire
This collection offers a valuable resource for collaborative pianists exploring global folk music. The intermediate piano arrangements provide supportive textures that beautifully complement a vocal line, without overly doubling the melody. This allows for nuanced interpretation and vocal expression. While specific vocal ranges aren't noted, the accessible harmonies and well-structured accompaniments make these Malay folk songs excellent for coaching singers.

Refreshing!
This collection of folks songs transcribed for solo piano was an instant hit in my studio. Students unanimously chose: Trek TekTek, Milk Coffee and At Dawn. The pieces on the first several pages are more accessible for early-intermediate pianists and as the pieces progress through the book, rhythms and technical requirements get increasingly challenging. Particularly sublime are: Suriram and Longing. Several of the pieces have a catchy, almost calypso style rhythm (Mak Inang, Milk Coffee...) which is entertaining and fun! Highly recommended for teachers who want to bring a splash of the islands to their studio!
