About the American Women Concert Series
The American Women Concert Series was a series of carillon recitals that took place September 27th, 2024 – April 12, 2025 celebrating groundbreaking American female music artists from the past 75 years. The project aimed not only to honor these artists but also to expand their representation in the carillon repertoire through a series of original arrangements. The series featured a wide range of genres, including blues, folk, gospel, jazz, pop, rock, soul, and Tejano, among others. Performances took place on both the Baird Carillon and the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
About Cass Elliot
Cass Elliot (born Ellen Naomi Cohen; September 19, 1941 – July 29, 1974), was an American singer perhaps best known for her work in the 1960s folk rock group the Mamas & the Papas. The group’s rich vocal harmonies and blend of folk, pop and rock became one of the iconic sounds of 1960s counterculture, winning the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary (R&R) Performance in 1967. Elliot released five solo albums after departing the group, which contain some of her most recognizable recordings, including “Make Your Own Kind of Music”.
Despite processional success, Elliot struggled in her personal life with body image, weight and health. Her success challenged expectations of body standards and femininity in the entertainment industry, and she is remembered today for her expressive style, wit, intellect and rich, confident vocals. Elliot died of a heart attack at the age of 34 in London and was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Mamas & the Papas in 1998.
All arrangements from Celebrating the Life, Legacy and Music of: Cass Elliot are dedicated to Nick, a lifelong friend of the carillon.
