In 1962, author Ray Bradbury published his dark fantasy novel Something Wicked This Way Comes. The second book in his Green Town Trilogy, and inspired by a childhood encounter with a carnival leader named Mr. Electrico who commanded Bradbury to “live forever!“, the story follows two 13-year-old best friends and their nightmarish experience with a traveling carnival. The carnival’s leader is the mysterious “Mr. Dark”, who seemingly wields the power to grant the townspeople’s secret desires.
Seemingly ripe for film adaptation, it wasn’t until 1981 that it was finally picked up for production, surprisingly by Walt Disney Pictures, who at that time were looking for more “edgy” stories to tell. Even so, it seems that the film turned out to be a lot darker than they were anticipating, and poor test screening feedback led to significant edits and reshoots to adjust the picture’s tone.
The original cut of the movie had been scored by French composer Georges Delerue; an unusual choice for such a dark subject matter given his reputation for writing romantic scores, however he produced a fantastically dark and mysterious effort which is critically acclaimed to this day.
With such significant changes being made to the picture, Delerue’s score no longer aligned with the on-screen action, and with their goal of creating a “lighter” tone, the studio called on a young James Horner, who had recently exploded into prominence with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, to compose a new score for the movie.

Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. An opportunity not to be missed!
