Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643–1704) set Mary’s Song of Praise from Luke 1, verses 46–55 a total of ten times. The Magnificat in A minor H 80 was probably composed during his time as maître de musique at the Jesuit church of St Louis in Paris, where the work was probably performed for the first time around 1690 at a Marian feast. In keeping with the tradition of the time, Charpentier contrasted stylistically alternating sections – virtuoso solo ariosi or duets, homophonic choral movements, and ornate counterpoint.
