The Latin Magnificat SWV 468 is a splendid composition full of harmonic surprises. This masterpiece by the mature Schütz from the 1640s or 1650s survives only in handwritten parts held in Uppsala University Library. Schütz forms each of Magnificat’s individual verses separately, but refrains from fragmenting the work into distinct movements. Being scored for two chapel choirs that interact with one another adds to the work’s splendor. The choirs can also be omitted, or only one may be used.
