Magic Simon is a musical tribute to my dog Sima, Toy Fox Terrier, who passed away in 2022.
Sima had a structural malformation of skull, which led to syringomyelia: his skull literally became too small for his brain. There was not enough space for the cerebellum, leading it to eventually protrude into Simo's spinal canal and inhibiting the fluid flowing freely into the brain and back. ln humans this condition is treatable, but in dogs there is not much that can be done. By the time Simo was finally diagnosed correctly he had lost most of his sight and of his hearing, and he was no longer able to feel or control his hind feet or tail.
The MRI scan revealed that massive part of his brain tissue had been destroyed, yet somehow he was still able to recognise us and show us affection.
The orchestral piece Magic Simon (2023) is a tribute to our beloved Simo, but also an attempt to raise awareness of syringomyelia and other similar conditions, that substantially are caused by overbreeding of toy-sized dogs. Breeding that focuses only to achieve certain exaggerated anatomical features have a direct correlation to skull malformations and syringomyelia, leading to neurological pain and eventually premature death.
