Madness, when love becomes madness
On August 20, 2012, “Madness” was released, one of Muse's most iconic singles.
While the original is a triumph of minimalist electro-pop, this version for five mixed voices and soloist elevates the song to a new dimension.
The voices intertwine to recreate the electronic effects of the original track “in the raw”: the beat of the synthesizers is replaced by rapid syllabification and onomatopoeic sounds that sustain the rhythm. The harmonies, broad and sometimes deliberately dissonant, perfectly replicate the distorted atmosphere of the song. This version transforms the cold calculation of the computer into the vibrant warmth of human breath, making the conflict described in the lyrics even more intimate and visceral.
The genesis: a modern blues
Described by Chris Martin as the best song of Muse's career, “Madness” has its roots in blues. As Matt Bellamy himself explains: “It's a very personal song.
