This arrangement for solo flute and harp/piano maintains the plaintive lament intended by the text of Robert Croo in 'The Coventry Mystery Plays': The pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors written by Croo around the year 1534 ,known as The Coventry Carol, it is one of the most plaintive carols sung at the Christmas festive season, citing the massacre of the innocents at the behest of King Herod. The flute part is haunting and set in the low and middle registers. The harp/piano part allows for tansparency in the sound design by complimenting the linear melody of the flute with arpeggio figures and bolder strummed chords in the implied dramatic, middle section. It is a gentle lullaby and an ideal instrumental arrangement for a nativity play or act of worship, carol service and the like.
