Billy Joel wrote 'Lullaby' to answer his seven year old daughter Alexa Ray's question, 'What happens when you die?' He explained in an interview that the best way he could explain to her was , 'Well, you go into other people's hearts,'. It was origionally a Gregorian Chant prelude to 'River of Dreams', with Latin lyrics about a man loosing his faith. 'Lullaby' is a popular choice for father-daughter dances at weddings. A picture book based on the song was written by Billy Joel and illustrated by Yvonne Gilbert, reassuring children that they are not alone or can't be abandoned. The song is reimagined here for Brass Quintet with Flugelhorn taking the vocal line. A beautiful song (a humanistic hymn) with a stong melody and a rich and simple setting which compounds the impact.
