Um die Jahreswende 1872/73 machte sich Peter I. Tschaikowsky an die Komposition eines Zyklus von „6 Romanzen für Gesang und Klavier opus 16, startete dabei mit dem einem Wiegenlied nach einem Text aus den „Modernen griechischen Liedern von Apollon Nikolajewitsch Maikow. Über die Entstehung des Œuvres ist nichts überliefert; der russische Musiker war nach Moskau übersiedelt, unterrichtete am Konservatorium, hatte aber als Komponist noch keinen durchschlagenden Erfolg. Mit der Gattung des Liedes beschäftigte er sich Zeit seines Lebens, wagte sich bereits nach 1856, in seiner Studienzeit, an erste Lieder und Romanzen und legte in seinem Todesjahr 1893 einen letzten Zyklus vor. Das hier vorgelegte „Wiegenlied eröffnet den frühen Romanzen-Zyklus opus 6. Tschaikowsky widmete es Nadeshda Nikolajewna Rimskaja-Korsakowa, der Frau des Komponistenkollegen. Es ist ein zugleich schlichter wie ausdrucksstarker Gesang in balladenhaftem Erzählton.
