Lu Cardillo (The Goldfinch) is a traditional Neapolitan song of the 19th Century, often attributed to poets Tommaso Bonito and Ernesto Del Preite, and composer Pietro Labriola. Lu Cardillo tells a poignant story of hopeless love through the simple image of a goldfinch. A lover waits in vain for his beloved to look out of the window.
The goldfinch becomes the messenger of the lover's sorrow: he wishes to train it as a messenger and spy, carrying "lli 'mmasciate" (news) of his feelings, bringing him news about the woman he loves, and telling her the weight of his silent suffering.
