In this its ballad form the narrator mourns the death of the woman left behind by her beau. Note: “John" was a slang term for a sailor, used to describe a ship's deckhands. And shanties often have a call and response structure, this allowed one sailor to set the rhythm of work for the others. This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble, with the bass section taking the lead. It is to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 3:10+-.
