This is an arrangement of the hit song, "Lover Girl" written by Laufey and Spencer Stewart as arranged for FLEX ensemble (any combination of 5 or more band and/or string instruments with optional vocal and rhythm section. The practical world of music ensembles makes it difficult to get the same people playing any set of designated instruments together for rehearsals AND performances. Hopefully, this will help with filling all the parts for small ensembles when a substitute instrument is needed AND simultaneously permit ALL students to fit into a larger ensemble no matter what the instrumentation happens to be at that time.
There are three main parts: Solo 1, Harmony 2, and Bass 3 in all the necessary keys (C treble clef, C Bass Clef, Bb, Eb, F, and alto clef for Viola). For example, the C Treble Part could be used for Violin, Flute, Oboe, Recorder, Mallets or any other instrument in C concert. In the C Treble Part there is an optional bonus harmony Divisi added in the Solo Part. You probably won't have to print the entire PDF, just select the parts that you need.
For most efficient introduction to this for an ensemble it is advised to follow these steps:
1. Only pass out the "Harmony 2" parts-make sure these are learned by everyone in the ensemble first (strongest players through most novice). The Bossa Rhythms may be unfamiliar, so have everyone master the rhythm patterns and articulations on a single pitch (Concert A or Bb?) followed by each player choosing which of the three pitches to play. They will have the option to switch to top, middle or bottom until it sounds best for the ensemble and they are comfortable. Adding someone playing the bass part and/or full rhythm section playing might help at this stage.
2. Pass out the Solo/Bass parts. Have everyone learn the Bass part and combine that with the Harmony parts.
3. Finally, Add the solo part with the vocalist or soloist playing on top of the Harmony and Bass parts.
I found it possible to teach a complex piece like this rather quickly and accurately using this procedure. Enjoy!
