Pat's first opportunity to record an album of his own was for Vanguard Records. The record company had him sign a contract at that time (for $500) to get him off the street. They had already financially invested an extensive marketing budget for another young guitarist, Larry Coryell, and by confining Pat (along with his fast-growing reputation) for a full year, neutralized any danger of recorded competition. Ron Carter played bass on the album, Tommy Flanagan played piano, and Arnie Wise on drums.
