Inspired by a romance disapproved of by her family and friends, Swift wrote the song drawing from William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, but with a happy ending. The lyrics tell the story of a couple overcoming obstacles, culminating in a marriage proposal. Produced by Swift and Nathan Chapman, the midtempo country-pop track features a key change after the bridge and incorporates acoustic instruments such as banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and guitar.
Upon release, critics praised the production but found the Shakespearean references lacking. Over time, however, "Love Story" has been recognized as one of Swift's most iconic singles. The song topped the charts in Australia—earning a fourteen-times platinum certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA)—and reached the top five in Canada, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. In the United States, it peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the first country song to reach number one on the Pop Songs chart. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified it eight-times platinum, with sales exceeding six million copies in the U.S. and 18 million worldwide.
The accompanying music video, directed by Trey Fanjoy, stars Swift and Justin Gaston as star-crossed lovers in a historical setting inspired by the Renaissance and Regency eras. The video won Video of the Year at both the Country Music Association Awards and the CMT Music Awards in 2009. "Love Story" became a staple of Swift's live performances, appearing in the setlists of all her headlining tours from the Fearless Tour (2009–2010) to the Eras Tour (2023–2024). In 2021, following a dispute over the ownership of her back catalog, Swift re-recorded the song as "Love Story (Taylor’s Version)." The re-recording topped the Hot Country Songs chart, making her the second artist after Dolly Parton to achieve this milestone with both the original and re-recorded versions of a song.
