When I was assembling titles for my upcoming recording which eventually was titled “Fantazm,” I consulted my brother Pat for his input. He has a knack for finding quality, obscure songs from the jazz and popular song archives and “My Love & I” is one of them. Fantazm, also his suggestion, is a little know piece from the premier American composer Duke Ellington, and this one by David Raksin form an old film called “Apache.”
Pat would play this at times when he would sit in with Carlos Santana whose sensitive accompaniment made it a show stopper. It was a no brainer after hearing it and I soon had the score paper pages flying off the desk.
In general, the dynamic range is from soft to medium volume with a climatic point (end of the trumpet solo) of loud at best. The key for the performance is making sure the woodwinds can be heard throughout. If necessary, it’s possible to substitute the baritone sax for the bass clarinet but it lessens the effect of the section.
