Commissioned by BBC Radio 3 for the 2012 BBC Proms. First performed on 5th August 2012 at the Royal Albert Hall, London, by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Donald Runnicles. Instrumentation: 3 Flutes, 3rd doubling Piccolo 3 Oboes, 3rd doubling Cor Anglais 2 Clarinets in Bb Bass Clarinet 2 Trombones Tubaabassoon 4 Horns in F 3 Trumpets in Bb 3 Trombones Tuba Harp Timpani Percussion (3 players): Vibraphone, Crotales, 2 Suspended Cymbals (High, Medium), Tam-Tam, Chinese Bell Tree, 5 Tom-Toms, Bass Drum Strings (at least 16.14.12.10.8).
