Living Word is another in a series of "Easier Anthems for Smaller Choirs" that are designed to allow a more modest ensemble to sound full and rich with judicious yet doable parts for unison, 2-part, or SAB voicing, with occasional moments for SATB in some of them. The text is original but scripture based, and is an interpolation of the message presented in the Gospels. The piece is appropriate for General Worship situations throughout the Church year. The piano accompaniment is part of the fabric of the texture of the overall sound, and the interludes both execute the harmonic progression to a new tonal center and provide a continuity in thematic material that echoes the choir and interweaves with it. The music is rich melodically and harmonically, with a few logical meter changes that are never forced but are a natural outgrowth of the music and text. This and the others in this series bring the sophistication of the 20th and 21st centuries to the idiom of easily approachable anthems for both the choir to sing and the congregation to hear.
