The music opens with the otter scurrying along the riverbank, using light, quick gestures and easy hand-over-hand movements that suggest busy, playful motion. It then flows into a smoother section representing the otter swimming through the river.
Next, the otter climbs back onto the bank and joyfully slides down toward the water. This leads into a long, accelerating descending scale on white keys, played hand-over-hand, building excitement.
The piece ends with a big, fun splash as the performer uses the full palm on the lowest notes of the piano. Performance notes throughout help students follow the otter’s playful story.
This piece is recommended for early elementary level students. Approximate RCM / Conservatory Canada piano level: Prep B.
